Executive Functioning Services

Executive Functioning (EF) work is strategic and goal-oriented with a focus on improving functioning in daily life. Our EF services are designed to support individuals in building skills such as planning, organization, prioritization, time-management, and task initiation. These skills help build confidence and support success in home, school, work and community environments.

How We Work

A psychologically-informed lens assists us in assessing the needs of and best approaches for each client. We provide individual EF sessions for children - with parental involvement - and for adults in-person at our office, virtually and when appropriate, within the home.

We view EF work as inherently collaborative and rooted in a shared curiosity and flexibility in trying strategies, offering and accepting feedback and reengaging with new strategies to foster academic and personal growth.

Initial Session

EF work initially involves an interview and information gathering meeting, where we talk about past strategy use, success, challenges, and barriers. We may also ask for relevant school and testing reports to be shared ahead of this meeting.

Ongoing Sessions

Each EF session thereafter has a consistent focus and structure as follows:

  • Review of the prior week’s strategies

  • Goal-setting

  • Discussion and practice with strategies

  • Formulation for a homework plan of execution

Common Skills Addressed

While EF challenges are often associated with ADHD, Learning Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders and anxiety, many people can benefit from learning or enhancing EF skills.

Typical targeted skills include:

  • Time-management

  • Planning and scheduling

  • Prioritizing tasks and responsibilities

  • Organization of materials

  • Study skills and academic self-monitoring

  • Task initiation and follow-through

  • Self-advocacy and increased academic or work-independence

  • Test Anxiety

Collaboration & Consultation

We find that the most effective EF work embodies a systemic approach when appropriate. With the client’s consent, we collaborate with parents, teachers, family members, and others to support strategy-usage and goal-monitoring across environments.

Integration with Other Services

EF skill-building often complements other components of a treatment plan. It may indicate the need for neuropsychological or psychoeducational assessment and therapeutic work. Clients and families are encouraged to review our related services for a more complete understanding of our comprehensive offerings.

Professional Development Trainings

EF skills can impact multiple aspects of a student’s experience in school and beyond academics, testing modifications, and accommodations. We are also available for professional development training focused on psychologically-informed executive functioning work with teachers and support staff and how they can nurture executive functioning skills from the organizational, social-emotional, and workload perspectives to foster student growth and development.
